What is a Rasul/Serail Mud Treatment?
You might have seen the words “Serail Mud Chamber” pop up on some of our spa treatment menus or offer pages or an online offer and wondered what the treatment actually is. We wrote this handy guide so you will wonder no more...
What is a Rasul Mud treatment / Serail Mud Chamber?
The Rasul spa treatment (otherwise known as Serial Mud treatment) is based on an ancient ritual in which medicinal mud from the Greek Isle of Limnos originally was used. This mud is no longer used however, due to the pH being too acidic. Ours actually comes from the Austrian Alps! The serail chamber itself is like a special steam room, designed to enhance the benefits of the mud on skin.
What are the mud treatment benefits?
There are a few benefits to a mud treatment. To start, the mud is incredibly mineral-rich and will leave your skin feeling soft-as-silk once the treatment it over. It also has a special ability to act as an antibiotic treatment when applied topically to the skin, so can help calm the skin and quicken the recovery of minor wounds. It also aids skin regeneration and makes hair strong and soft by strengthening the connective tissue in hair, so feel free to cover your hair strands in mud too! This treatment also warms the muscles, making it perfect before a massage - especially if you are after a deep tissue massage! It will also help your muscles recover quicker from an intensive massage.
So, what exactly happens during the treatment?
First, you’ll be introduced to the chamber and shown where everything is. It’s important to stay hydrated during this treatment, which is why you’ll be left with some water for drinking. A therapist will ensure you are comfortable and familiar with the treatment, before leaving the chamber.
This is when your treatment really begins! You will have a few minutes to apply the mud to face, scalp, hair and body. If you’re with your partner, it can be fun to apply it on each other. Once you are happy with the amount of mud, you sit either side of the chamber and enjoy the room’s heated temperature. The chamber then fills with steam to help the mud bake – but not harden!
After some time of the chamber being filled with steam, a gentle shower will help keep you cool and stop the mud drying. This process repeats for 40 minutes – a great time to catch up! At the end, you’ll be allowed some time to shower in the adjacent room. Aside from removing any leftover mud, this shower is to wake you up and bring down your body temperature.
Once you’ve finished in the chamber, t is advised you rest for about 20 minutes. Remember to moisturise your skin, then head to our relaxation chamber and take some further me time.
Are mud treatments suitable for eczema?
Our mud is calming and soothing, and generally renowned for its calming effect on Psoriasis, eczema and other irritable skin complaints. The chamber itself/ steam room are also preferable for those who suffer with eczema over saunas. as they retain moisture in the air and are less drying for the skin. That said, if you are concerned please speak with a member of the team or with your doctor if you have any skin-specific concerns.
Is the mud actually mud?
Yes and no - it's not the kind of mud you find in the garden! Our 'mud' is sourced from finely ground minerals, hand harvested from the Austrian Alps! (Talk about luxurious...).
The actual ingredients are:
Mica – improves the feel of your skin.
Bentonite - a clay with a range of nutrients and an abundance of minerals, including calcium, magnesium, silica, sodium, copper, iron and potassium. Thanks to the clay's special ability to act as an antibiotic treatment when applied topically to the skin, the clay can help to calm skin infections and speed up healing time of wounds or eczema, even when prescription antibiotics were not able to help solve the problem.
Silica - aids in skin regeneration and makes hair strong and soft by strengthening the connective tissue in hair, encouraging hair growth.
Kaolin - is deeply cleansing and will refine pores and skin structure – a great way to get rid of acne, blackheads and pimples. It will also purify, revitalize and boost skin cell renewal.
Is this treatment good for couples?
Mud treatments as perfect for couples - if you're feeling bold, you can take turns to cover the other in mud! The 45 minutes of treatment also allows a nice portion of time to catch up and talk about life. This treatment is also great for those who aren't used to going to spas, so great for any partners who dislike the idea of a spa date!
Do I need to bring a friend or partner?
Of course not! If you’re seeking some true me-time, you can book the chamber for one person instead of two. We do tend to recommend two people take the experience together as there is plenty of time for talking, but it's completely fine to book for one.
What if there are more than two of us?
Our chambers are built for two people, so unfortunately, we can only fit two people in at a time. We feel this creates a more intimate treatment. If more than two of you are interested, simply ask about booking one after the other, so your party can take turns in the chamber. If you ask our therapists when booking, they’ll find a way to make sure everyone is happy! Prehaps some of you can have treatments while others are in the chamber, then swap around. Just speak to us when booking!
